The new year is under way and with it many people make New Year's resolutions to lose weight, get in shape or to become healthier.  The important thing is to stay focused on an attainable goal.  Set small reasonable goals for yourself and plan how to reach them. 

Here are some starter suggestions:

I recommend you make a written contract with yourself to do whatever is necessary to reach your goals.  Spell out what you are planning to do and how often you will exercise.  Then, actually schedule into your daily routine the times you will work out. Like anything else if you plan and make an appointment with yourself, you are more likely to exercise.

Try to find a workout buddy to exercise with you at least part of the time.  Occasionally, you just don't feel like going to the gym, if you know you will be meeting someone there, you are more likely to roll out of bed and go because you don't want to let them down.

Begin keeping a log of everything you are eating and drinking and when.  This will allow you to see where you may need to adjust your diet. (Often we don't even realize exactly what we are eating until it is down on paper.)  Are you consuming too much sodium, calories, or junk food?  Are you drinking enough water?

Exercise of the Month:

Incline Dumbbell Press

(Works Pectoralis Major and Minor, Anterior Deltoid, and Triceps)

Sit on an incline bench with dumbbells.  Use a forward palm grip.  Begin with dumbbells out to the side just above shoulder level with arms bent.  Keep your elbows directly under the weight.  Press the dumbbells up and towards each other, extending your arms fully, being careful never to fully lock out your elbows.  Top position is dumbbells directly over your chest.  Return to starting position.  (Complete desired number of reps and sets.)

*Never allow dumbbells to go lower than the level of your shoulders as this puts unnecessary stress on the joints. Keep back flat on bench and feet flat on floor.
